In Drug reform, Gary Johnson, Our America, Press Release on January 13, 2010 by Josiah Schmidt

Press release from Gary Johnson’s Our America website today:

January 13, 2010, Washington, DC—Gary Johnson, former Republican Governor of New Mexico and Honorary Chairman of the OUR America Initiative will speak today at the Marijuana Policy Project’s 15th Anniversary Dinner in Washington DC.

Johnson believes that current drug policies need to be changed. “The answer to solving this problem lies in sentencing reform, in supplying treatment on demand, and in honest drug education for our children,” Johnson remarked. “We need to advocate harm reduction measures and move from a criminal to a medical model of dealing with drug usage. Locking up more and more people who are nonviolent drug offenders, whose real problem is that they are addicted to drugs, is simply a waste of money and human resources. These approaches fail to deal with the real problems of abuse. Our goal should be to lower the abuse rate in America and we believe a new direction is needed for that to happen.” Johnson further stated, “I advocate a don’t do drugs policy. I believe that recreational use can be very destructive to individuals and to society.”
